This morning the grade 7's attended an orientation event put on by teachers and students from Georgian Bay Secondary School. They participated in a variety of activities including an "amazing race."
In math, the students learned about "Order of Operations." They used the BEDMAS rule (Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction) to simplify and solve a range of arithmetic problems.
In language, we continued to read from The Giver and then the students had a mini-lesson on writing dialogue, in preparation for our upcoming narrative writing unit. For homework, the students are asked to transcribe the dialogue from a short scene in The Hunger Games, and write it out as a properly formatted dialogue, using quotation marks, dialogue tags (ie. he said, she exclaimed), and paragraph breaks (each time a new person speaks). Click here to access the movie clip.
Students only need to write dialogue for the section of the clip starting at 0:40 and ending at 1:07.
Below is a sample dialogue that we looked at:
Mr. Embacher opened the class door and closed it behind him. He looked up and noticed Mia standing in front of him.
"Good morning, Mia," he said in a surprised voice.
"Good morning, Mr. E," Mia responded cheerfully.
"What are you doing doing here so early?" he asked, a bit puzzled.
She shrugged slightly and looked away. "I don't know," she mumbled.
"Alright," replied Mr. Embacher. He hesitated. "Take a seat," he instructed, pointing to a chair at the front of the room. Mia did so without another word.
